Aqueon strives to cover all the bases, making this a well rounded powerhead with sizes to suit any and all tank sizes. They offer a lifetime limited warranty, which really adds a lot of value to this medium cost aquarium powerhead.

Set-up

Setting up the Aqueon Circulation pump is a simple yet fickle process. Before even opening the box all owners should know the mount is extremely brittle. Most of these powerheads don’t die because of system failures, but rather broken mounts. turning this pump too quickly or with any force can easily snap the powerhead right off the mount. Adjust the powerhead as slow as possible to avoid this issue.

Next off you will note the absolutely enormous suction cup mount on this powerhead. Despite this size it can still become too weak after it has seen a few months of use. To fix this you can apply heat to the suction cup, which resets the plastic back into its original form. Additionally you can attach the suction cup while it is still hot. This will cause the air underneath to contract, creating a powerful bond between suction cup and glass. Keep in mind this will make the suction cup very difficult to remove.

The cord is fairly long, measuring around 6 feet. This gives you plenty of freedom when choosing position. To get the pump even deeper in the tank you can even tape a power strip to the bottom of the aquarium. This is something I do with all of my tanks, as it creates a drip loop for all of my equipment while also bringing the power source closer to the tank.

Assembly

A quick note is the impeller. It has a reverse running prevention mechanism installed directly on it. This creates a bit of noise on start up but keeps the powerhead running forward for its entire lifetime.

The pump separates right at the middle of the powerhead, giving you direct access to the impeller and its mount. These two should be cleaned using a soft material, as any abrasive materials can scratch the magnetic components and result in irregular motions. This will increase the wear on the propeller as well as the noise generation.

When cleaning the grate you are free to leave the coralline algae alone. The pump is not weak and won’t be slowed down easily.

Flow & Adjustments

The Aqueon Circulation pump comes on a ball mount, which again is fragile and must be turned with care. You can direct the flow 360 degrees.

The flow is spot on, no less or more than you pay for. Aqueon is generally good on their accuracy so this shouldn’t be a surprise.

The flow speed cannot be adjusted, only diffused by blocking the flow with decorations or pointing the powerhead at the glass wall. There are plenty of sizes to choose from, so this shouldn’t be too big of an issue. Just match your powerhead size to the tanks inhabitants.

Warranty & Lifetime

Aqueon supports a lifetime limited warranty on this powerhead, meaning they will replace your product when it breaks down so long as you hold proof of payment. This can be a paper receipt or your conformation email. Keep these saved as some products can way outlive their normal lifetime. My LFS, local fish store, has the same powerhead in their coral tank as they did before they even started a business, over 17 years ago.

The average lifetime on the Aqueon Circulation pump ranges between 6-18 months, with broken mounts being the most frequent reason for out of commission powerheads. I know I have been harping on it but seriously, do not break this mount and the Aqueon will last quite awhile. Combine this with the lifetime warranty and you can easily have this powerhead run your tank for a tanks entire life.
